Are You Holding onto a Thief?

Who would ever cling to a robber and refuse to let go? A worrier would.

Who worries? We all do. We worry about jobs, relationships, health, and everything else. We’re afraid that something bad will happen, or that something good won’t happen. And we think that if we worry, we can prevent bad things or cause good things.

This sounds self-empowering. The more I worry, the safer my future will be. Worry will help me create the future I want.

But does this actually work? It might, if you were God. If you were God, you would control the future. But you’re not God. So worry doesn’t work very well. In fact, it doesn’t work at all.

If worry doesn’t work, what does it do? It robs us. It steals the gift God gave us to comfort us and give us joy.

What gift is this? The peace of God that surpasses all understanding. It’s the gift of living in a present reality where all our needs are met because God is with us and for us.

This is the secret to creating a joyful present and a safe future: God is with us today, and God will be with us tomorrow and forever.

Because this is true, all the things that we want to happen or not happen cease to matter. The only thing that matters is God. Because God is with us, we are safe forever. We are loved forever. And we will live forever.

Let go of the thief. Rest safe in God.

Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
